good read...

I still think he should have been on the doc,

I was thinking the same thing when I watching the doc, but then it all started to come back to me..

Nah, he was fine where he was at. History was erased because of his greed.

Very Very good read and I believe it's good that he backed up Jalen Rose on his comments
comes to show those guys had each other's back forreal! But after watching the
documentary I understand why he wasn't on there and supported because those moments
are probably still hurting him or he doesn't want to state anything that he'd regret. Now he
responded to the Jalen Rose's comments, if he responds to more remains to be seen. All I know
is I'm riding with them more than ever, they went through too much and that scandal I now believe
was a way for the college to try to "erase history".

but UNC is year in and year out the top school, or one of the top schools, in terms of merchandise sold and they've never (been caught) with basketball violations like this. So its not like what they went through is that much different from other players in that regard. They just couldn't handle it all that well.

I doubt that's the case. Me coming from a 150K household isn't going to stop me from wanting to make millions as soon as I can.

If you're a hoop fan and historian, then the only way you don't know about ESPN's 30/30 "Fab 5" film is if you're living under a rock with Rick from that insurance commercial. For cats that are outside of the loop, 3/5 Fab Fivers made an appearance earlier this week on the network's show ("First Take") to promote the film and discuss it.

Jay Crawford interviewed Fab5 Alum's Jimmy King, Ray Jackson, and Jalen Rose to get insight and talk about the old days in "A Square" (Ann Arbor, MI). One occurrence in the old days was the bitter feud between the U of Michigan and Duke. As Jay cut to a clip of the film, you saw Jalen express his feelings toward that school in Durham, NC: "…I hated everything Duke. They only recruit Uncle Tom black athletes."

Now keep in mind Jalen Rose is an employed NBA analyst for ESPN, and he responsibly made sure he wouldn't get fired for using such controversial language. Also, that was a 30+ year old man reflecting from his days as an impressionable teen-ager fresh out of high school. But usually where there's smoke, fire is right behind.

To some, Jalen's generalization of Duke and schools of that ilk (Indiana, Kansas) were the smoke, but to me, the fire is the reality. After ESPN showed the clip the adult Jalen didn't clean up or backpedal from his comments, rather restated his comment more politically correct. He basically said during the time of his recruitment, certain schools only recruited black athletes from a certain tenement: polished black families usually with two parent households.

The posterboy of Jalen's angst at the time was Grant Hill. Hill was an All-American guy who's mother was roommates with Hillary Clinton and dad played running back for America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys. Hill emerged from an astute and affluent high school in the suburbs, where Jalen conversely hailed from Detroit's Public School League ( sidetone: waddup Southwestern , shout out to Vashon Leonard and Howard Eisley!)

Besides playing in urban Detroit, Jalen's household was broken. His mom led a single-parent home while his Dad Jimmy Walker, also a pro athlete, was inactive in Jalen's life. Quite naturally that made Jalen jealous. Not of Hill, but of his fortunate situation. Assessing Grant Hill as an "Uncle Tom" isn't accurate. Uncle Tom to me is someone who goes out of his way to not be so associated or identified with his culture. G Hill and his family were just ahead of their time. How many black households do you know in 2011 where 1 or 2 parents are college educated with money?

Now for the "fire" part of my analogy, the reality. It is true during the time Rose was being recruited (91) , players from the Fab 5 weren't heavily recruited from Duke, and they were the top players of the country! Why is that? Is it because Coach K came from that Army/Coach Bob Knight dictatorial, disciplined style of coaching he didn't think was conducive for the Fab-5? Or was it because the Fab-5 were the first of its kind: hip hop listening, baggy shorts-wearing, trash-talking ballers from the urban city? Coach K must've been afraid for his life that these potential malcontents were thugs and killers.

Fast forward 20 years later, and the Fab-5 are respectable, suit-wearing, upstanding businessman and citizens of the USA. Not to be blasphemous, but they did sacrifice a lot and were scrutinized so much just so that the modern athlete could be accepted for embracing the hip hop culture and be free to express himself. Jalen's Uncle Tom comment wasn't a slight at Coach K or even an assault at the kids. Jalen's comment was to alert coaches across the country that basketball talent is basketball talent, no matter if it comes from the suburbs or the city. Take the time to know and understand me before you judge me. Only God can do that. Roses do grow from concrete!

True True, you have a point on that! And who knows maybe UNC keep their
issues/incidents under wraps in terms of the media. Idda know if Chris Webber
could've prevented that scandal by being honest about the money he did get
from Eddie Martin.

Cofucking sign, Matt and his slave master logic fails again. Coach K knows what the fuck he is doing, he likes the neutered negros.

he can't go to Michigan or be any part of anything associated with Michigan til 2013. he just didn't want to talk about the timeout or the stuff with the booster. like jimmy king said to this day they haven't even discussed the timeout call.

The thing is as duke is not a school most black athletes wanna go to but its just as unappealing to many white athletes! Its not like every white talented athlete comes from trust fund money and goes to the country club every day. The majority of talented white athletes like larry bird come form some hick town growing up poor. Now the media has been bias toward white athletes cause its okay if bird talks trash but its not okay if the fab 5 do...that aint right. However most white athletes are poor and hate the structure of duke. At the same time you can't blame grant hills parents for becoming rich. We always bitch about why us black people cant make it then once someone does and has a family with 2 parents we try to bring them down. It's not like grant hill was hanging with rush limbaugh and bill o'reily and didn't mess with black people. And who cares if hillary was his moms roomate. Shit the Clinton's have done more shit for black people than Obama and his brainwashed ass to follow what these white people tell him to do.

Clinton did something for Black people??? They did go to jail a lot more, that's an accomplishment I guess. In all seriousness, Uncle Tom should be reserved for matters of more seriousness than Duke Basketball. Nothing Tom about Jay Williams. Being polish as an individual is just that and it's your ability to connect and your work ethic that matters in life no matter where you start.

As for most whites from poor grounds. They hate Duke too. It's middle white America who dreams to be rich but aren't and the White rich who love Duke Basketball. The wealthy tend to play other sports like Polo. Most Black kids I know who like Duke weren't rich, they usually had both parents but weren't rich. Some were middle class and some were barely middle class. I remember one of my best friends used to wear Duke clothes all the time as a kid, it wasn't till he was a teen he changed because everyone liked more brotha type teams. Me, I always liked Georgetown. The Fab 5 was cool but I didn't get to into them.

coaches want players that are coachable and fit in with the program they are trying to run. Bottom line is that coach K knows the type of player he wants, he's probably recruited hundreds of kids and has how he picks his players down to a science. The result is........ well..... look at coach Ks stats. It works for him and the program. At this point why would he take a chance on the type of player he has no idea how to coach. Bottom line is if you don't like the coach or the university or the athletes at the university, that's great because you don't have to.
