Black comic books/graphic novels

Marvel MAX: Cage by Brian Azzarello A mature -Modern take on the character before Bendis got his hands on him. A bit stereotypical in Cage's depiction, but somewhat enjoyable.

DC Vertigo: Sentences: The Life and times of MF Grimm-Basically a graphic novel autobiography of MF grimm. Even if you don't give a shit about Grimm, it offers a great peak into the NY/Hip Hop scene of the 80's and 90's.

Birth of A Nation by Aaron Mcgruder,Kyle Baker and Reginald Hudlin-"When the virtually all-black population of East St. Louis, Ill., is disenfranchised en masse in electoral shenanigans that result in a George W. Bush–like Texan governor being elected president, the impoverished city decides to secede from the U.S. Renaming itself "Blackland," the city becomes a wildly rich money-laundering capital." Amazon description. Ive heard good things about it tho.

Quantum and Woody by Christopher Priest-All tho this might be difficult to track down, the premise is that its a buddy comic featuring a stern yet extremely competent Black superhero (Quantum) with his White lazy and shallow partner Woody (which is kind of a reversal of these types of situations). A very critically acclaimed series in its day that tackled a lot of issues.

Black Panther by Christopher Priest-Considered the best BP run ever. Only problem is, its only collected into two trades. Now there is the Reginald Hudlin BP, but its not nearly as good in quality but its far longer and collected into more trades.

The Milestone/Dakota Universe-Dwayne Mcduffie + various writers+-In the early nineties, D-McDuffie (RIP) wanted to create his own superhero universe with more black characters. The Milestone universe was the result. Was very successful for its time and spawned Static.

there's tons more but all i can think off right now

All the characters from the Milestone Universe were great. It was a diverse universe (not just black). And it was it's time. It was just misunderstood as "ah, comics for black people. Next!" which is unfortunate considering it was one of the very few comic universes that included a wide range of races in lead roles. What I loved about it was it went beyond the whole "flying guy, beam guy, black guy" aesthetic that many companies go by today. With, for example, the black characters you had your liberals, conservatives, successful, poor, gay, heterosexual, good guy, scumbags, etc. That's something you see all the time for white characters, but rarely for other races (especially black). Also, Static wasn't even the best of the characters (although a good one). So the "only good one was Static" is very off. It may have been the one that got mainstream exposure (cartoon, etc) but that doesn't mean there weren't equally or better characters in the Milestone universe.

SMH @ Icon being on earth during slavery yet only using his powers to 'lighten the load off slaves and help start the underground railroad' instead of running roughshod over craccas. That character is not trill. I'm truly disappointed. I think all the time about having a time machine and traveling back to the late 18th century with automatic weapons and a serious cache of munitions.

agreed @publicenemigo I often thought the same when I was little but then again he is a republican in the comics....

Al Simmons woulda been murking slave owners

That Batwing comic is pretty dope. I only got up to issue 4 but gonna get the rest this weekend. I heard static was getting cancelled.. Wish spawn was still Al simmons. White guys story is alright but al simmons was dope from beginning to almost the end.

Anyone know if they are gonna reboot black panther? there hasnt been a new panther comic in months at the shop i go to.

Off topic: Is anyone else fuckin with that Marvel Alliance app game on FB? I've been gettin into it, it's very Missions focused and not PVP and Event focused like SHC.

@PublicEnimigo I didnt get to read after issue 110, but from what ive gathered Al beats maelbogia(?) and takes over heaven. The "Green" world was after that. pretty much fighting mother nature who was neutral in the war of hell and heaven. I know in the last issues it reveals that Al did get wanda pregnant before he died but they got into a fight and he hit her and she had a miscarriage. Al gets depressed and The symbiote finds him worthless and Al Shoots himself in the head. Then the symbiote takes over Jim Downing. There was some issues apparently where al turns into omega spawn, but he cant control himself. Todd McFarlane says he will gather the story arc (i beleive it starts at 180-199) for als death into one graphic novel. The new guy takes over in issue 200 i beleive. i jumped in at 213 so im kinda lost on his origins. maelbogia is fighting clown and regaining his power tho. Last issue was dope imo.
