As Baton Rouge Reels From Shootings, Mayor Calls Racial Profiling ‘Bullshit’

The mayor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana flatly denied claims police have contributed to the sharp divides in a city that recently witnessed the fatal police shooting of a black man and the slaying of three police officers.

“That’s bullshit,” Mayor Kip Holden told BuzzFeed News, after reporter Albert Samaha told him of residents’ complaints of racial profiling by local officers.

Alton Sterling, 37, was killed by police officers two weeks ago outside the convenience store where he often sold CDs to earn extra income. Cell phone video of the gruesome shooting sparked mass protests nationwide. Before the city had time to regroup, Gavin Long, a disturbed ex-Marine, ambushed a group of police officers on Sunday, shooting six of them and killing three.

In the aftermath of these jarring incidents, black residents told reporters from CNN, Buzzfeed and the Los Angeles Times about the long-simmering racial tensions in their southern river town and the arbitrary searches and excessive force they’ve faced from police.

Holden, who is black, dismissed these accounts in his interview with BuzzFeed, saying he would “pay for the polygraph test.”

“They’re not stopping and frisking people at random. Just do what is expected of you and you won’t be stopped and frisked,” he added.

State and city officials were criticized for meeting a Black Lives Matter protest over Sterling’s death last week with a fleet of armored trucks and police in riot gear who arrested dozens.

Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) said he was “very proud” of the response, which he deemed “very moderate.”

Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr. also defended the use of military gear at peaceful protests.

In a Monday press conference on the shooting of the three officers, Dabadie said the department’s tactics led to Long’s death and saved the lives of other cops.

“Our militarization tactics, as they are called, saved lives here,” Dabadie told BuzzFeed.

“They’re not stopping and frisking people at random. Just do what is expected of you and you won’t be stopped and frisked,” he added.

Huh?

What is expected of Blacks?

The biggest issue for me is. Have the balls to say; "Fuck niggers! We will do what we want, whenever we want and there aint shit you can do about it". It's the condescending insults on Black intelligence that angers me most.

Anyone in denial of racial profiling in america, especially in the south of all places, is blatantly lying to you, and is a distrustful piece of shit. People just want to walk their neighborhoods, and not be presumed to be a fucking drug dealer.

This is why i say we live in a pseudo police state in america. A cop can just make up a reason to pull you over, or stop you on your bike, or stop you while youre walking, and you have no power over this. You can say no i dont want to be searched, and all they do is get even more suspicious, and find ways to keep you pulled over even longer. There is no accountability. Theyve only been forced more to be accountable because god bless, technology has brought our society to new heights.

I dont give a fuck if its a drug block, and you see a nigga walking with his pants damn near to his knees. If he isnt breaking the law, you keep it moving.

Officers could do this shit in the suburbs, and find drugs on white kids all day every day. They say theyre just targeting high crime areas, so its not our fault. It is your fault when you dont have reason to stop us, but you still do anyways.

You know how that shit makes you feel, when youre doing nothing wrong, but you get stopped and treated like a criminal anyways. Its dehumanizing, and fucking enraging. Thats not even being a victim of police brutality, just your average whats in the back pack shit, or i pulled you over for imaginary reasons shit.

I used to live in Mechanicsville here in Atl. I would watch the cops fuck with the young men in the neighborhood all the time. They would just jump out and fuck with them for no reason. I would kick it with the youngings from time to time. Throw them tickets to hawks games, hit em with kicks and whatever I could do. I knew some of them were small time hustlers but they were good kids and you could sense all they wanted was for thorough older brothers to engage them. Give them some hope at something better. Anyways.

Here is the disgusting part. I lived not even two blocks from the braves stadium. On game nights during the season the overwhelmingly WHITE patrons at these braves games would brazenly walk the streets with open containers of alcohol, being noisy, illegally parking in the neighborhood and the cops would sit and do absolutely nothing.

I don't make excuses EVER in life. However, I have lived, experienced and seen the hypocrisy of our govt. law enforcement and white supremacy at work first hand. The shit is real.

Told of residents’ complaints about police treatment, however, Mayor Kip Holden replied, “That’s bullshit.” Those residents, he told BuzzFeed News, were lying. “I’ll pay for the polygraph test,” he said. “They’re not stopping and frisking people at random. Just do what is expected of you and you won’t be stopped and frisked.”

As Baton Rouge sits at the epicenter of the current wave of protests over police shootings and the use of excessive force in black communities, city officials have defended the decisions and practices of local law enforcement. At a press conference on Monday, Baton Rouge Chief of Police Carl Dabadie Jr. doubled down on his department’s use of riot gear and armored trucks at peaceful protests. “We’ve been questioned… about our militarization tactics,” he said. Citing the police response that ultimately killed Long, he said, “Our militarization tactics, as they are called, saved lives here.” (The Baton Rouge Police Department did not respond to interview requests for this story.)

Meanwhile, Holden said that claims about the department’s over-aggression in black neighborhoods was “exaggerated.” Baton Rouge officers, he said, have been trained to build relationships with locals all over the city.

“We’re telling them to stop the car, get out,” and introduce themselves to residents, giving their card and telling them they’ll be patrolling the neighborhood. “That is in place now.”

According to USA Today’s 2014 database of arrest statistics, black people are nearly three times as likely as white people to be arrested in Baton Rouge (284 arrests per 1,000 black residents to 105 arrests per 1,000 white residents). Since 1980, the department has been under a federal consent decree to diversify its recruiting. Though the city is majority black, the police force is two-thirds white. An investigation by the local CBS affiliate found that, based on 2013 data, Baton Rouge was one of six majority black cities with a population over 100,000 to have a majority white police force. Of those six cities, Baton Rouge had the largest disparity between the percentage of black people in the population and the percentage of black officers in the department.

In September 2014, an officer was forced to resign after he was found to have sent text messages describing black people as “monkeys” and hoping “someone would pull a Ferguson on them and take them out.” In April 2016, Sgt. Todd Bourgoyne was placed on administrative leave after a video emerged showing him punching a 16-year-old black boy at an Earth Day festival.

The department has faced criticism for its failure to build trust with black residents for many years. Some community leaders, though, saw hope for progress in the months after Dewayne White was named police chief in May 2011. In a radio interview that October, White publicly acknowledged that, for some officers in the department, “It’s become so ingrained in their mind that they believe that everybody they come across or most people they come across with that color of skin is probably a criminal.”

He declared his intentions to reform the department’s relationship with the city’s black community. In his first few months on the job, he visited black churches, met regularly with the local NAACP president, and formed a new unit that assigned five officers to the city’s highest-crime area to forge relationships with residents.

“He did promote a lot of black officers,” State Representative Ted James said. “He was very involved in the community.”

But the local police union turned against him, and within months, he lost the support of Mayor Kip Holden. Holden fired White in February 2013. In a letter informing White of the termination, Holden said that White “made inflammatory public statements to the press wherein you inappropriately accused a large segment of the BRPD of racial bias in an apparent effort to curry favor with the press and certain public figures.”

In a statement to BuzzFeed News last week explaining the mayor’s decision, Chief Administrative Officer William Daniel said, “While former Chief White talked publicly about community policing, he never implemented any community policing procedures.” Daniel said that hiring White’s replacement, Dabadie, “has strengthened community relations in Baton Rouge.”

In his interview with BuzzFeed News on Monday, Holden reaffirmed that point.

“We started community policing about three years ago,” he said

But but but if we vote black people into office we can change things from the inside. Get the fuck outta here with that voting bullshit

Politics. These people deny racism because they don't want to lose backing, simple.

The governor of Minnesota said that the philando shooting was racial.. however, he isn't up for reelection, so he had nothing to lose.. its all politics, its not about truth and honesty

These police unions are the problem. Look what they did to Deblasio in NY. People are scared to cross them politically so nothing happens

Something similar happened here in Cincinnati with our former Police Cheif Jeffery Blackwell.

He was trying the change the culture of the police force and urged the officers to form actual relationships with the people of the community on their beat. He was doing a lot of good. And in the process he made some enemies and was inevitably fired. I think he is planning on suing the city.

Vote him out and then what? Replace him with someone who will follow the rules of White Supremacy?

Exactly. Police unions are corrupt, and always have been. The fact that no president has stepped in and used his power to normalize PD's all across the country with varying rules, practices, regulations, etc.. is mind boggling, but makes perfect sense in stupid ass america.

Read my comments in the bill maher thread for further fleshing out of things Obama hasnt done for the AMERICAN PEOPLE under his presidency.

Too many coons in our ranks to ever pull ahead as a community...

Shits sad really

For a old nigga that grew up and witnessed the civil rights era in the south to tell his black population (that elected him) that their bullshitting about the existence of racism...to pander to people that hate him his momma and his kids is beyond disgusting
