Lyrics.

You can flow like water over a beat but it dont mean shit if you aint got something to say.

You also can have lyrics like Nas and be off beat like Silk Tha Shocker. Are you honestly going to be able to tolerate that song for 3 or 4 minutes? It's not what you say, it's how you say it.

Lyrics are very important but lets be honest with ourselves. When you listen to somebody talk about something very important, their tone of voice is also taken into consideration and ultimately decides if you're going to take them seriously or not.

A bitch can be smart as Bill Gates but talks like Marge Simpson. Are you really going to sit and listen to that shit?

C/S Your Voice is an instrument, and rapping is like singing.

u could be a great song writer, but if u can't carry a note then u can't sing, and in rap it's all flow i gives a fuck how lyrically nice you are, if ya flowing horribly.

Some cats got a sloppy flow but at least be saying something significant

Example: Chino XL.

worst flow of any rapper. Spits better shit than 90% of these rappers.

Flow is the first thing I listen for, after that its lyrics. Talib Kweli isn't always on beat and neither is Common but they can engage lyrically to the point where it won't matter as much but I was introduced to rap through flows so I definitely listen to flows first.

They both go hand in hand. I think some of ya are gettin flow (the way you stress ya syllables to the 4/4 Rhythm of the beat) confused wit delivery (the mood/emotion/tone of a rapper's voice). A rapper with great lyrics could still have a good flow, because alot of the times, the way a rapper write their lyrics is usually matchin the rhythm of the instrumental (mainly the drums). Now alot of times, rappers with great lyrics have terrible deliveries (Immortal Technique). With that said, I think delivery is the most important aspect. A rapper could have average lyrics (Snoop), but if their delivery's great, I could listen all day.
