The two flagged down a man they saw on a street and let him in the car when he offered to direct them to where they were headed, sources said.
At some point, the man pulled out a gun and announced a robbery as Franklin sat in the passenger seat and his friend drove, the sources said. One of the victims handed over $400 in cash to the robber, the sources said.
The robber then opened fire, striking Franklin twice in the back and twice on the right side of his body, the sources said.

"He went along for the ride, that's all. He was going up there to do something, or visit someone," said Dorothy Franklin, victim's sister.
Chicago Police say Franklin was a passenger in a car and the driver was his neighbor in Arkansas. Police say they pulled off the Dan Ryan Expressway to ask for directions about 3:45 a.m. on Thursday morning. But the victim's sister questions that story.
"My brother was from the West Side of Chicago, so why is it that he's going to ask for directions?" said Dorothy Franklin.
She says Franklin lived in Chicago 30 years ago and knows the area. She adds that Franklin and the driver are from a small Arkansas town called Blytheville and live in the same neighborhood.
"It was somebody he know all his life, they was friends," said Dorothy Franklin.
In Chicago, police say the two Arkansas men asked for directions when they exited the Dan Ryan. But instead, a gunman got into the car, robbed them, got out of the car, and then fired shots into the vehicle, hitting Franklin.
"Why are you going to rob someone who ain't got no money. He ain't got no money," said Dorothy Franklin.
After that, police say the driver rushed Franklin to Stroger Hospital. Dorothy Franklin is suspicious of the entire story.
"Now everybody, old and young, are saying the same thing. There is more to it than that," said Franklin.
Chicago Police say they have been talking to the driver. So far, no one is in custody or charged
