i hear they cut off access to certain streets and curb the people by using police barriers/barricades to create a "cattle pens". this supposedly keeps the crowd in order and lessens chaos (i.e., the shoving thru people like you mentioned), and also allows the police to navigate through the crowd without a problem.

i never been to times square on new year's eve. this would be my first time going, if i decide to go.

LOL. i hope that doesnt happen to me if i go. i want to go because i never experienced it, and it looks like fun. plus i'd like to see the ball drop in person - i usually watch it on tv.

Naaaah, but I've been to watch the peach drop in Downtown ATL, & if it's anything like that, I'll be alright avoiding it.
