So teach your kids a language they won't use? Unless they are going to use it being bilingual is pointless.

When I took swahili i learned about not just the language but the people, history etc so unless its like that then no.

I can't see any advantage of African-Americans as a whole in teaching our children an African language. Not in any tangible way, anyway. There are plenty of advantages in terms of psyche, culture, pride, etc. But I guess those advantages can morph into actual tangible advantages. So I guess what I'm saying is...

...I have no fucking idea.

a better language for African Americans to learn would be Haitian Creole or Portuguese over Twi or Yoruba or any other African language

As far as I understand it, most African languages aren't written. They don't have characters or letters, its just spoken.

Not very practical imo.

I agree that a broader range of languages should be taught in schools...

But as a parent you suggest that I LEARN a language then TEACH it to my kids??

FOH

We should have our own languages. The hard part is deciding which ones to learn. There are over 1000 African languages we can try. However, we should try to create one by evolving the existing African American Vernacular, i.e. ebonics. However, while we do that we can also learn other existing languages like Swahili, or maybe a Mende language.

It should be noted that most Africans know more than one language. With that in mind, I've studied Haitian Creole, Brazilian Portuguese, etc. Whatever language we teach our kids, it's important to encourage them to speak it amongst themselves; otherwise, the language will die.

Aave is the decreolized remnant of an earlier creole language. Its not coming back

There's nothing wrong with learning another language. My problem with Hispanics is they & whites are allowed to covertly discriminate against blacks by putting, "must be bilingual" on a lot of job applications.

I know maybe 3 Mexicans who don't speak Spanish. I know countless blacks who dont. And it's never on a job application that just as many whites will likely apply to.

Always on some regular ass job. Language is definitely used as a tool for both advancement and oppression of people. But teaching a language that wont be used? Fuck for?

The weird thing about America is that to some being able to speak another language is seen as a threat instead of something that is a good thing.

That's why I encourage people to travel. Thinking in an American frame of mind will only hold you back. The world is much bigger.
