Mobb Deep had extra hype from one hit song and then Tupac flushed them down the toilet.

I can't speak for New York, but to me Mobb Deep was an acquired taste. A lot of their music back then was dark and dreary. You really would have had to be into that sort of music or else you weren't going to feel Mobb Deep. They could have never have been the best group because they couldn't have appealed to everybody. In terms of lyricism though they were good at being descriptive in their rhymes and painting a verbal picture for you while also being to the point.

i really dont think that the mob was better than the wu...it seems as if they were in the same lane during the 90's....Wu might've been the bigger name but they got just about equal spins on hot-97 from what i can remember....the mobb put in that work p was at his best during the 90's dont believe that ktlu cat even after the pac thing the mobb was releasing raw shyt that did pretty good commercially

if pac said "fuck that guy" a whooooole lot of rap fans would go "yeah fuck that guy forever!"

remember that nas sampled pac saying "fuck jay-z" on ether

its the only good part of the song, really

Mobb Deep and Nas was on the same level at one point. When they dropped Quiet Storm and was featured on "Its Mine" they were big.

Pac was big, no denyin that. When he died girls came to school crying wearing his Tshirts. Shit i was in like 4th grade

A lot of good Answers .. damn .. i can see how their music wasn't as commercially appealing like the Cult fans that Wu Had..

Hearing that even fans outside of New York felt his work is a good look though.. I always heard that P was in consideration for Top 10, and i think Murda Muzik displayed that perfectly.

Matter fact, i think Murda Muzik was their best album, IMO.

2Pac seemed like a hater .. but shit, if he had the power to switch peoples opinon about a dope rapper, i guess thats power.

I agree with Ktulu on Pac's impact on the Mobbs career, but i think if Shook One's dropped 2Pacs name in it, it would've been a more competitive battle.

Drop a Gem on Em, and Its Mine ft. Nas are still classic though..

Wu always had the edge over the mobb in terms of the consensus opinion, but the mobb had some tough songs and albums back in the day, prodigy was looked at as being really nice.

Tupac was huge when he was alive, dude had like an army of fans and he was articulate too so you'd see him all over tv giving interviews on like all the mainstream shows and on mtv all the time. Those prison interviews were epic b no homo... but it took it to like another level when he died.

Tupac was an icon too like outside the context of rap music, he transcended it which is what sets him apart from a lot of other great rappers. And it was a different time, race relations were real tense in the early 90s and tupac was like on mtv and abc talking like a black nationalist.

First off .. my sob story:

I'm only 20, so my birth into Hip Hop was in the early 2000's. Now, since the 90's is obviously the GOAT decade of Hip Hop,

I have a lot of questions to ask about during that time frame.

I still fuck with a lot of the new rappers today, but i'm fully aware that all the best and historic stuff happened in the 90's.

There's a lot of 80's and 90's Heads in the Reason, and I'm sure yall no more about things then us newer fans.

With that said.. My first question is:

Was Mobb Deep ever considered the Best Rap Group in New York at any point of time?

3 straight classics, Pure Grimmy Lyrics, advanced Production .. I know Mobb Deep had to be better then Wu-Tang at one point.

murda muzik was when they became more of a house hold name and started to get there respect as a elite group......but they still had classic albums and anthem songs like

Survival of the Fittest, shook ones, Hell on Earth, Drop a Gem on 'Em, songs like that put there stamp on the game earlier in there career.....

C/s I think Murda Muzik is their best album. Most people say The Infamous. But I was a big Mobb Deep fan back then.

THing people like to forget is Pac was always goin in on somebody, even when they didnt say nuthin back.... Same shit they get mad @ 50 for doing now. But Mobb Deep was one of the only groups from NY always saying something when somebody dissed NY. Like When Snoop came out with New York, New York...I remember Mobb Deep riding out with That LA LA song.

to answer the op mobb deep was considered one of the best groups in the 90's but not the best the wu had that locked down, but prodigy was considered "ahead of his time"

to answer this pac question he had his detractors and his loyal fans basically like any other rapper today, and i think pac's star has risen after his death imo.
