Anyone check that new Common album?

Its good, but not spectacular IMO. Its kind of cruise control. The beats are great but don't really jump at you, but I find them better than Com's lyrical performance. He's kinda just rappin here, doesn't sound like he has a lot to prove (and he doesn't). Good, but kinda lacks hunger. This seems...

Alright, Essence, grill me. What albums have I overlooked this year?

Doomtree - No Kings Crazy fast paced out there but UG beats. Great lyricism by the whole gang. Grieves - Together/Apart Very introspective and honest. Like a cross between his Rhymesayer labelmates Brother Ali and Slug. Great lyricism.

where are the 7L & Esoteric fans?

Always been a big 7L & Esoteric fan. DC2 and Dangerous Connection are probably my favorites. Also really like Eso's solo album Egoclapper. Love how unlike alot of the others in AOTP they are willing to experiment with sounds like A New Dope, and all of Eso's crazy ass solo work like the Gary...

Essence Producer Vs. Series: Exile Vs. Nicolay

I prefer Nicolay. His beats just seem more varied. From what I've heard from Exile is he can get a little bland at times and doesn't have enough variance, both inter-song variance and variance across albums, to truly be one of the elite to me.

The Roots - Undun - New Album, 6th December, 2011

Album is fantastic. Dark, but beautiful. Only listened to once so far but will definitely become one of the highlights of the year. Solid play from front to back. BT is spitting ferociously.

    The Roots-Undun is AMAZING

Album is amazing. Solid from start to finish. Dark, but musical on a level that is new to Roots. BT is still spitting ferociously. One of the best of the year for sure.

Immortal Technique - The Martyr Discussion Thread

Middle Passage still hasn't been released. 3rd World is very similar in sound and style to The martyr, but I would say it is slightly better than the Martyr.

Nominees for Independent/Underground Album of the Year...

Slug and Ant return for their most mature and ambitious effort yet, and this time they brought some friends along. The long running duo of Atmosphere is no longer, as the 2 have evolved into a full fledged band. With the band comes an evolution in sound, featuring crisp guitar, pounding guys...

(OASIS) Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds…The Death of You & Me... Thoughts?

As a singer, I actually like Liam more, but Noel was the brain's behind the song writing and it really shows when you compare Beady Eye to High Flying Birds. I like both but I prefer Noel's album over Beady's.

    Y'all bang with Vampire Weekend?

One of my favorite new bands. First album was absolutely incredible and Contra was a worthy follow up. Fave songs include Horchatta, Walcott, A-Punk, The Kids Don`t Stand A Chance, Giving Up The Gun, Holiday, and I Think Your A Co. ntra

(OASIS) Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds…The Death of You & Me... Thoughts?

Long time Oasis fan and I really like this album. The album is more subdued than a lot of Oasis`more stadium rock stylings and that approach mixed with the dips into new instrumentation like horn solo on The Death of You and Me give the album that extra kick. Great album, only gave it a few...

Just Started Listening to Brother Ali

Its all good, love all the albums, and the EPs too. Shadows On The Sun is my favorite followed by Us. But also check out that Champion EP, which includes Rain Water, one of my favorite brother Ali songs, hell, one of my favorite songs period.

Jedi Mind Tricks Announces Violence Begets Violence

My take on JMT's Violence Begets Violence. Gave the album a listen and a half, its like a wacker version of Heavy Metal Kings. The beats are not too bad, well, some are, that beat on the track with the Outsidaz is ass. Vinnie is in complete cruise control, verses are mostly good with some great...
